Peebles Players
A community music group offering disabled people the chance to enjoy regular creative music sessions.
What does your charity/project do?
Up to 40 disabled members with carers attend weekly music sessions in voice and percussion. Music is improvised, every member contributing, however disabled. Each project leads to performance in theatre: 2010 Song of the Sea took us across oceans in a wave of wonderful music: 2011 began with Arabic dance under a specialist leader - colourful fun & new sounds. Now developing a new project Wings inspired by birds. Above all, everyone has fun!
How does your charity/project support the local community?
Members develop musical and social skills & use music as a means of communication. Meeting from different Borders areas, friendships grow within the group. Community links are forged through performance when we share music and fun with a growing, loyal audience. Volunteers support us in many practical ways & it has given new direction to young people.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
As costs rise, so do our ambitions! An award could fund and enhance our next project, Wings: Repair, upgrade and purchase instruments. Fabric for scenery and costumes. Hire of theatre & technician. Outreach to study birds in the field. Professional puppetteer for workshops. Professional Ornithologist for advice. Professional dancer to choreograph dance movements. Source images for back projection. Develop our publicity.
